In fact, they should really be called English evaluations.Why?  Because rather than passing or failing, your score indicates your fluency in English. This means that everyone can judge their level fairly a nd then put it onto their CV and have it understood by almost anyone who reads it.Let’s have a look at three of the biggest English exams. You might have heard of them...We’re talking about the TOEFL, TOEIC, and the GMAT!Everyone should take a page out of Shakespeare's book! (Source: Wikimedia Commons)Let’s have a look at the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) first!TOEFLThe TOEFL is obviously for non-native speakers of English and is a varied test of your reading and writing skills, listening skills, and your spoken English. It’s particularly useful for those at academic institutions like university or those looking to study in an English-speaking country.It was created in 1964 by Princeton University’s Educational Testing Service (ETS).There aren't many free English tests and the TOEFL is no different. Unfortunately, like almost every other English exam, you'll have to pay for it.Once you have your TOEFL, it’s valid for two years. However, before you open yo ur wallet and pay to sit the exam, you should probably take a look at what it is, what it includes, and what it's good for.The TOEFL is a multiple-choice exam with two versions (the offline computer version has been replaced by the online version):The PBT paper version of the exam which is scored out of 677 points.And the iBT internet version of the exam which is scored out of 120 points.Both exams are broken into four parts which include: listening (between 1 hour and 1 hour 30 minutes), reading  (1 hour), writing (20 minutes), and speaking (20 minutes using a microphone).TOEICThe TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) is also run by the “ETS” and has been around since 1979 and in many ways is very similar to the TOEFL.The main and most important difference is that this exam focuses on international communication and is geared towards business English rather than everyday English like the TOEFL.The TOEIC is accepted in 150 different countries by thousands and t housands of businesses. In fact, it was the Japanese government that gave Princeton the idea!The exam tests listening and reading over the course of two hours. The results are on a scale of 990 with different colours indicating the grade boundaries.There’s also a speaking and writing paper you can choose to take that lasts 1 hour 20 minutes.See the best English lessons for you.GMATFinally, the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) takes another step towards business and management, in particular.The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) in the US first offered the GMAT in 1953.The exam is indispensable for those wanting to complete an MBA in an English-speaking university. Some multinational businesses and top-rated universities require it as part of their recruitment or admissions procedure.The GMAT lasts 4 hours and tests every linguistic skill imaginable before scoring you out of 800 points.It also includes maths and logic questions.Your score is calculated to includ e results from every time you’ve taken the GMAT within the last 5 years too.In addition to the three giants of English-language examinations, there are also plenty of English-language certificates you can get to prove your abilities.ETS also includes lighter versions of the TOEFL and the TOEIC for those whose English level doesn’t need to be as high. The TOEIC Bridge, for example, is designed for secondary-school students. There’s also the TOEFL Junior for even younger candidates.E-learning might very well be the future of learning English. (Source: stocksnap)Cambridge English Language AssessmentThe University of Cambridge in the UK also provides examinations which are more common for non-native speakers across Europe.The KET (Key English Test) is equivalent to the CEFR A2, the PET (Preliminary English Test) and the FCE (First Certificate in English) correspond to B1 and B2 respectively.Finally, they also offer the CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) for C1 and the CPE (Cert ificate of Proficiency in English) accrediting a C2 level of English.If you’re not going to choose to do Cambridge exam, you could opt for the BULATS (Business Language Testing Service). You can also verify your level in French, German, and Spanish at the same time in doing so.The British Council also offer the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) which is chosen by 3 million candidates every year! A number of English-speaking countries use this when it comes to immigration. Your result is given to you as one of the CEFR levels.Don’t forget you can also opt for national exams. Below, he shares his experience at Fairfield University: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Owen: Fairfield University feels like an oasis. It resides in the beautiful suburban beach town of Fairfield, Connecticut. From end to end, one can walk this lovely campus in about thirty minutes. The compact nature creates a sense of community that is unique to Fairfield; everyones face feels familiar and every destination feels close. And escaping the oasis is easy: a free shuttle runs a loop every half hour, to the train station (which provides a direct line to Grand Central Station in New York City), the downtown area, and the local supermarket. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Owen:The physical sense of community and easy access extends to the professors. Fairfields typically small class sizes allow for students to form genuine relationships with their educators. Professors go beyond making themselves available for regular office hours. They take time to talk with students after classes, offer research partnerships, and recommend books tailored to ones interests. Some will even sit down with a student for coffee and offer valuable career counseling and insight. One always gets the feeling that the professors take their work with students seriously and that they want what is best for their students. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Owen:From top to bottom, the university works to maintain a continuous sense of community. Dorm life is a key piece of this community. Incoming freshmen are surveyed based on preferences, like average bed time and study habits, then placed with a roommate who is a good match. The semi-random assignment process pushes freshmen to make new friends on the first day. Official events support community bonding, but often, its the casual drop-ins, the open doors, and friendly hellos that build the sense of togetherness among hallmates. Fairfield only has one main dining hall, called Barone, and it extends the communal feeling of the dorms outward. Its hard to walk into the dining hall without seeing a friend from a class, a dorm, or a club, and Barone can provide an all-day space for socialization and studying. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Owen:The university is a force in the worlds of nursing and business, boasting two excellent schools for both that produce students who are almost immediately employed after graduation. The majors outside of these programs also offer wonderful opportunity and support. I can say personally that my experience as a theatre major at Fairfield has led in large part to my deep love and appreciation for my time at the university. I had professors who were actively interested in my personal and academic growth, who worked alongside me to produce plays, and who always pushed me to realize my potential to create brilliant theatre. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Owen:Meeting people as a freshman can take time, but the school works hard to create spaces for building relationships. Each dorm has weekly events for all of its residents. Clubs actively seek out new recruits and eagerly bring them into the fold. Movie nights, lecture series, concerts, church services, and community outings stack the monthly calendar with opportunities to make friends. In my experience, my closest and most quickly-made friends came from my involvement in clubs and extracurricular programs. Each club functions as a community within the larger community, and these mini-communities take care of their members. Everyone is offered opportunities to be responsible for some aspect of the club and chances to gain respect by working alongside veteran club members as an equal. Fairfields active club, program, and sports communities take the place of Greek life on campus. For me, the absence of fraternities and sororities seemed to facilitate making friends across diverse groups of people. How helpful is the Career Center and other student support services? Owen:Because of the business and nursing Schools' prominent reputations, high profile companies consistently recruit on campus. I had a strong idea of my path immediately after college and did not make much use of the career center, however I did make use of other support services. The schools counseling service is filled with compassionate and qualified individuals who, like the professors, always have a students best interests at heart. How are the various study areas such as libraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Owen:Every dorm at Fairfield has multiple lounges and study areas that are available to any student. The library is spacious and filled with a variety of resource rooms for a number of purposes. Around finals time, the resource rooms get quite crowded and often require a reservation, but students are also free to use classrooms as study spacesensuring that everyone has the space they need to prepare. Describe the surrounding town. Owen:The town surrounding the university has a quiet suburban feel. There are a number of good restaurants and coffee shops in the downtown area, but in terms of nightlife, the town itself is quiet. Students mostly stay on campus to socialize, but there is typically enough going on to keep everyone engaged and happy. One of the true perks of Fairfield University is its proximity to Fairfield Beach. Many seniors live in beach houses, and there are a number of memorable events held at the beach. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one you regret the most. Owen:My experience with the FairfieldTheatre program involving one of my professors was a microcosm of the broader Fairfield University experience. At one point, in a moment of crisis, I turned to one of my professors and spilled out a myriad of academic struggles, fears of the future, and personal doubts. Sitting in her office, we talked through a plan and a path for the future. She expressed firm, unyielding belief in my ability to become a successful student and artist, and offered continued support along the way. I have stayed in contact with her ever since, checking in for career advice, encouragement, and wisdom. That kind of personal relationship is something that the Fairfield University community fosters. The small classes, the inclusive atmosphere of clubs and programs, and the student-centered approach create a space where mentors and friends seem to be around every corner. Relatively prime numbers are also called as co-prime numbers or mutually prime numbers. This concept is very useful concept in mathematics. If a and b are any two integers they are called relatively prime numbers if both are divisible by number 1 and have no other common divisor. This can also be explained as the greatest common divisor for a, b is 1. Hence GCD of (a, b) is one. Example 1: Find if 30 and 77 are relatively prime numbers. Solution: Given are numbers 30 and 77. The number 30 can be written as: 30 = 1 * 2 * 3 * 5. The number 77 can be written as: 77 = 1* 7 * 11. Hence from the above representation of the numbers 30 and 77 its determined that they have a common factor 1. Hence 30 and 77 are relatively prime numbers. Example 2: Find if 48 and 36 are relatively prime numbers. Solution: Given are numbers 48 and 36. The number 48 can be written as: 48 = 1 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 *3 = 1 * 24 * 3. The number 36 can be written as: 36 = 1* 2 * 2* 3 * 3 = 1 * 22 *32. Hence from the above representation of the numbers 48 and 36 its determined that they have a common factors 1, 22 and 3. Hence 48 and 36 are not relatively prime numbers.
